  • Details: The streets and venues of Bagenalstown will come alive with the sounds of traditional Irish music, song and dance when the Leinster Fleadh hits this beautiful south Carlow town. The Fleadh – which annually attracts up to 12,000 visitors – will see Muine Bheag thronged with competitors, their families and myriad aficionados of our native traditions. Expect high standards of competition, exhilarating street performances, concerts, céilís, pub session trails and a celebration of local talent both present and past. There will be a week of musical events from Monday, July 9th, building up to a crescendo during the weekend 13th -15th with the festivities being broadcast live to TV screens nationally – and online globally – for the grand finale event! Coincides with the annual Bagenalstown Summer Festival.

  • Details: Ken Wardrop’s new documentary Making the Grade invites us into the world of the piano lesson as teachers and students throughout Ireland prepare for the annual graded musical exams. Funded under the Arts Council’s Reel Art Scheme the film presents a series of vignettes captured over seven months with teachers and their pupils as they work towards these exams.

This event includes a 3 Hour hands-on cooking experiance with expert tuition from a Weber certified barbeque chef. At the end of this event you will take home a weber certification, weber apron and weber receipe booklet. Spaces are limited to 20 per event to allow more one-to-one experiance for those attending, so booking is essential, tickets are €50 per person and can be booked in-store or online HERE. This event takes place in Arboretum Carlow and is the first of three such events over the summer months, keep in touch for future dates.

You will be struck by the similarities between ourselves and the people of the past. Our ancestors were able to feed, clothe and provide shelter for their families, but it was their skill and expertise that helped create the most beautiful handmade tools and crafts. So why not step back in time and experience how our ancestors lived. The exhibition is in association with the National Museum of Ireland and the National Roads Authority.   • Title: Carlow Castle 3D Model and Illustration on display

  • Details: Come view a 3D printed model and historical reconstruction illustration of Carlow Castle. Both the 3D model and illustration are based on the time period of the late 14th century when Carlow was the administrative Capital of Ireland. The 3D printed model of the castle was made by Industrial Design Students at IT Carlow. The illustration of the Castle & surrounding areas was undertaken by Uto Hogerzeil, historical reconstruction artist. Both were commissioned by Carlow Town Council in 2013 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the construction of Carlow Castle in 1213 AD. A free Carlow Castle brochure by Dr. Margaret Murphy, Carlow College is available to take away. Reception of Carlow County Council, Athy Road, Carlow Town.   • Title: St. Willibrord, Patron Saint of Luxembourg and his County Carlow Connection

  • Details: View this special exhibition that was featured on RTE television programme ‘Nationwide’ (view episode on the RTE Player, Monday 12th February). St. Willibrord, who was trained and ordained in county Carlow in the 7th century at the most important Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical settlement in Ireland. His connection has been celebrated in both Carlow and Luxembourg in June 2017. He is one of Europe’s most important saints, embarked on a mission to the continent from Carlow in AD 690 and this exhibition explores his enormous impact on the Netherlands, Germany & Luxembourg. Every year the town of Echternach, Luxembourg hosts an annual ‘hopping procession’, which has UNESCO World Heritage Status, in his honour. See a copy of St. Willibrord’s own hand writing, the oldest datable signature of an English person, written on a book from county Carlow. View samples of the beautiful manuscripts that were produced in Echternach. The method of making a manuscript is shown in detail, from producing the inks and the vellum to how the letters and designs were laid out.   • Title: Visit St. Mary’s Church
  • Venue: St. Mary’s Church, Church Street, Carlow town

  • Details: Visit the historical St. Mary’s Church which has been at the centre of Carlow towns’ Church of Ireland community since the 17th century. The present church is the third church on the site, with the second built in the 18th century while the present church was completed in the 1830s, no doubt incorporating parts of the earlier churches. View the many memorials to local families including one to Thomas Gurly, great grandfather of George Bernard Shaw, Oscar and Nobel prize winning playwright. Admission is free, donations welcome. Sunday worship at 10.45am; Holy Communion on Wednesdays at 10.30am followed a cuppa in the adjoining Church of Ireland Community House. For further information: Rev.
