  • Details: Friday 25th May 2018 & Saturday 26th May 2018 Ras Tailtean, the most prestigious race in Irish cycling, will ride into Carlow town on Friday afternoon and leave on Saturday morning as Institute of Technology Carlow receives and see off 155 riders as hosts of Stages 6 and 7 of the international cycling event. Traffic restrictions are expected around Barrack Street and Green Lane on both days as the eight-day international race arrives and departs from the Carlow town. The 1,200km cycling challenge, which began in Drogheda on Sunday, features the Irish national team, 11 international squads and 19 Irish county teams and already there is ferocious competition between the international and domestic riders. Friday sees the start of Stage 6 of the race, a 154.6km stretch from Mitchelstown to Carlow with the riders are expected to arrive at Barrack Street from 2pm. The teams will gather at the Institute of Technology Carlow on Friday before starting Stage 7 from Barrack Street at 10.30am for the 141.2 kms to Naas. This year’s event finishes in Skerries, Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

What better year to release this on vinyl than the year that the band are also celebrating 30 years on the road. This release marks one of many events that will take place this year to commemorate this important milestone. The vinyl release will be followed by a small nationwide tour, and in Carlow, Kíla will be joined on stage by Music Generation students for two songs.   • Details: Come view a 3D printed model and historical reconstruction illustration of Carlow Castle. Both the 3D model and illustration are based on the time period of the late 14th century when Carlow was the administrative Capital of Ireland. The 3D printed model of the castle was made by Industrial Design Students at IT Carlow. The illustration of the Castle & surrounding areas was undertaken by Uto Hogerzeil, historical reconstruction artist. Both were commissioned by Carlow Town Council in 2013 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the construction of Carlow Castle in 1213 AD. A free Carlow Castle brochure by Dr. Margaret Murphy, Carlow College is available to take away.

  • Details: View this special exhibition that was featured on RTE television programme ‘Nationwide’ (view episode on the RTE Player, Monday 12th February). St. Willibrord, who was trained and ordained in county Carlow in the 7th century at the most important Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical settlement in Ireland. His connection has been celebrated in both Carlow and Luxembourg in June 2017. He is one of Europe’s most important saints, embarked on a mission to the continent from Carlow in AD 690 and this exhibition explores his enormous impact on the Netherlands, Germany & Luxembourg. Every year the town of Echternach, Luxembourg hosts an annual ‘hopping procession’, which has UNESCO World Heritage Status, in his honour. See a copy of St. Willibrord’s own hand writing, the oldest datable signature of an English person, written on a book from county Carlow. View samples of the beautiful manuscripts that were produced in Echternach. The method of making a manuscript is shown in detail, from producing the inks and the vellum to how the letters and designs were laid out.
