  • Details: This year the Carlow Garden Festival continues over 11 days and promises a busy programme offering a variety of gardening workshops and talks set to inspire every level of gardener. The 2018 programme features an appealing mix of world-class UK gardeners including Chris Beardshaw, Carol Klein and Fergus Garrett combined with the very best of Irish garden broadcasters, writers and new trailblazers in Irish horticulture.

  • Details: Young and old are invited to a harvest and feast, and to learn more about the humble potato! Join us on Saturday 28th July 3pm to harvest a potato crop and enjoy potato pizzas at An Gairdín Beo Enjoy delicious food inspired by the spud by artists Deirdre OMahony and Eilish Langton, potato crisps made by Teagasc, and readings by the fantastic authors Lorna Sixsmith and Suzanna Crampton. Youre also welcome to bring your own potato dish! Spud Reboot was inspired by artist Deirdre O Mahonys new work The Persistent Return; a large scale, two-screen film installation that reflects upon the history of the potato and the role it played in consolidating and concentrating power in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The potato brought with it a possibility of freedom from recurring cycles of famine, but also a precarious dependency on monoculture. The Persistent Return runs at VISUAL in the Digital Gallery 6 June - 9 September 2018.Co-produced by Workhouse Union, Callan and VISUAL Carlow This is a collaborative project coordinated by VISUAL with artist Deirdre O’ Mahony, Carlow County Development Partnership, Greenside Up and An Gairdín Beo.   • Details: In his talk about ‘A Life in Gardening’, Adam Frost will tell the story of his journey from a young boy uprooted from the city to live in North Devon, to an award-winning garden designer and television presenter. His career really started when he went to work for Gardeners’ World presenter Geoff Hamilton at Barnsdale Gardens and eventually led him to win seven gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show. Adam will talk about where he finds his inspiration from - in nature, architecture, art, people and food. As well as drawing on memories, special places and people who have been influential to the way he designs."

  • Details: The construction of the Carlow By-pass saw many archaeological treasures been excavated during the M9 Carlow By-pass construction. You will be struck by the similarities between ourselves and the people of the past. Our ancestors were able to feed, clothe and provide shelter for their families, but it was their skill and expertise that helped create the most beautiful handmade tools and crafts. So why not step back in time and experience how our ancestors lived. The exhibition is in association with the National Museum of Ireland and the National Roads Authority.   • Details: Come view a 3D printed model and historical reconstruction illustration of Carlow Castle. Both the 3D model and illustration are based on the time period of the late 14th century when Carlow was the administrative Capital of Ireland. The 3D printed model of the castle was made by Industrial Design Students at IT Carlow. The illustration of the Castle & surrounding areas was undertaken by Uto Hogerzeil, historical reconstruction artist. Both were commissioned by Carlow Town Council in 2013 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the construction of Carlow Castle in 1213 AD. A free Carlow Castle brochure by Dr. Margaret Murphy, Carlow College is available to take away. Opening Hours: 09.30am – 4.30pm, Monday - Friday.

  • Details: View this special exhibition that was featured on RTE television programme ‘Nationwide’ (view episode on the RTE Player, Monday 12th February). St. Willibrord, who was trained and ordained in county Carlow in the 7th century at the most important Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical settlement in Ireland. His connection has been celebrated in both Carlow and Luxembourg in June 2017. He is one of Europe’s most important saints, embarked on a mission to the continent from Carlow in AD 690 and this exhibition explores his enormous impact on the Netherlands, Germany & Luxembourg. Every year the town of Echternach, Luxembourg hosts an annual ‘hopping procession’, which has UNESCO World Heritage Status, in his honour. See a copy of St. Willibrord’s own hand writing, the oldest datable signature of an English person, written on a book from county Carlow. View samples of the beautiful manuscripts that were produced in Echternach. The method of making a manuscript is shown in detail, from producing the inks and the vellum to how the letters and designs were laid out. View the many memorials to local families including one to Thomas Gurly, great grandfather of George Bernard Shaw, Oscar and Nobel prize winning playwright. Admission is free, donations welcome. Carlow County Council wish to advise consumers that in order to facilitate the upgrading of the water networks on Tullow Street, the water serving Cathedral Close, Tullow Street, Carlow, will be shut off from 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 25th July, 2018 to 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, 26th July, 2018.

These works are being undertaken by Coffey Northumbrian.
Carlow County Council and Irish Water apologise for any inconvenience caused.
