CARPARKING ARRANGEMENTS CARLOW TOWN CHRISTMAS 2017

Carlow County Council wish to inform the public of the following parking arrangements for Carlow Town Centre for the Christmas period:

Free parking from 9.30am to 12noon and 3.00pm to 6.30pm in all Pay and Display Parking Zones for the period Thursday 23rd November, 2017 to Saturday 30th December, 2017 inclusive

Free car parking for the period Thursday 23rd November to Saturday, 30th December, 2017 (inclusive) in the following public car parks only:

o Town Hall

o Bus Park

o Green Bank Road

o VISUAL 

First 30 minute free parking, for on-street parking only, on Tullow Street Upper and Tullow Street Lower; Dublin Street; Kennedy Avenue; Potato Market and Castle Street, continues to apply

  • Title: Carlow Castle 3D Model and Illustration on display

  • Details: Come view a 3D printed model and historical reconstruction illustration of Carlow Castle. Both the 3D model and illustration are based on the time period of the late 14th century when Carlow was the administrative Capital of Ireland. The 3D printed model of the castle was made by Industrial Design Students at IT Carlow. The illustration of the Castle & surrounding areas was undertaken by Uto Hogerzeil, historical reconstruction artist. Both were commissioned by Carlow Town Council in 2013 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the construction of Carlow Castle in 1213 AD. A free Carlow Castle brochure by Dr. Margaret Murphy, Carlow College is available to take away. Opening Hours: 09.30am – 4.30pm, Monday - Friday

  • Details: Visit the historical St. Mary’s Church which has been at the centre of Carlow towns’ Church of Ireland community since the 17th century. The present church is the third church on the site, with the second built in the 18th century while the present church was completed in the 1830s, no doubt incorporating parts of the earlier churches. View the many memorials to local families including one to Thomas Gurly, great grandfather of George Bernard Shaw, Oscar and Nobel prize winning playwright. Open Thursday to Sunday from 11.30am to 5.00pm. Admission is free, donations welcome.   • Title: St. Willibrord, Patron Saint of Luxembourg and his County Carlow Connection

  • Details: View this special exhibition on St. Willibrord, who was trained and ordained in county Carlow in the 7th century at the most important Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical settlement in Ireland. His connection has been celebrated in both Carlow and Luxembourg in June 2017. He is one of Europe’s most important saints, embarked on a mission to the continent from Carlow in AD 690 and this exhibition explores his enormous impact on the Netherlands, Germany & Luxembourg. Every year the town of Echternach, Luxembourg hosts an annual ‘hopping procession’, which has UNESCO World Heritage Status, in his honour. See a copy of St. Willibrord’s own hand writing, the oldest datable signature of an English person, written on a book from county Carlow. View samples of the beautiful manuscripts that were produced in Echternach. The method of making a manuscript is shown in detail, from producing the inks and the vellum to how the letters and designs were laid out. Free Admission. Kilkenny County Council - Abbey Quarter Information Evening

Kilkenny County Council has prepared a Draft Urban Design Code for the Abbey Quarter and has also published a Part 8 proposal for the redevelopment of the Brewhouse Building on the former Smithwicks Brewery site.

As part of both these processes, an informal Information Evening will be held on Thursday 30th November 2017 in The Maltings, Tilbury Place, Kilkenny City from 4pm-8pm where all the documentation will be on public display and Council staff will be present to answer any queries. All are welcome, no appointment is necessary.
